Learn the fundamentals of ballet—or just get a great workout—from a former principal dancer with the National Ballet of Cuba! The class is divided into two sections: ballet barre exercises and center work. Exercises at the barre will focus on correct posture, increasing flexibility, and strengthening the legs. The center work consists of cardio, body toning and muscle strengthening. The class is designed for dancers and non-dancers alike, male or female.

Dress code
You should wear a leotard or any attire that permits the instructor to check the position of your hips and knees. Ballet slippers strongly recommended.

Instructor
Caridad Martinez, a former principal dancer with the National Ballet of Cuba, has performed in many of the world's greatest theaters, including Scala de Milano, the Champs Elysses Theatre in Paris, the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Beaux Arts Theater in Mexico City, and the Kirov Theater in Saint Petersburg.  A graduate of the National School of Arts, she also studied at the Superior Institute of Art in Cuba. While Ms. Martinez lived in Mexico, she spearheaded a 9-year campaign to bring Cuban-based training to Mexican youth. She succeeded in this by founding and serving as Artistic Director of the Cuban-Mexico Ballet School for 13 years. She continues to be an advisor for the School. Ms. Martinez has also served as the Artistic Director and choreographer of The Havana Ballet Theater Company, as guest teacher and choreographer for the Beau Art Schools in Mexico, and as Conservatory Director and teacher at Brooklyn Ballet. She has choreographed for movies, television, and ballet and modern dance companies, and is currently working with DANZAMERICA International in Costa Rica, the Escuela Cubana de Ballet in Veracruz, Danza Activa in Panama, the 92nd Street Y, and Alberta Ballet School in Calgary, among others. Ms. Martinez is looking forward to bringing her artistic talents to Ballet Hispanico.

Class description
Learn the basics of mambo in the salsa capital of the world: New York City! The sexy, playful, and sophisticated New York style of salsa (“on 2,” as it’s referred to) has taken the world by storm, becoming the style of choice for many of today’s top dancers. Learn beginner turn patterns, spinning technique, musicality, and solo footwork combinations (called “shines”) in a friendly, engaging environment. No partner required. Whether you are a beginner to this dance, would like to polish your technique, or just want to socialize and have fun, this class will have you wowing at the Latin clubs in no time.

Instructor

Born and raised in New York, Nicholas Messina has a very diverse range of knowledge and insight into many different styles of dance including the Latin dances, American Rhythm and Smooth Ballroom dancing. However, New York’s style of "Salsa on 2” and New York style Cha Cha have become two of Nicholas’s passions. Having learned with many of New York’s top Salsa pioneers, he offers unique insight into the technique and form of the fun, popular style of dance known as “Salsa on 2” or “Mambo.” It is his understanding of Ballroom technique fused with the exhilarating, sexy, club style of New York’s Salsa/Mambo scene that makes learning with Nicholas such an uncommonly, wonderful experience. His love for Salsa and Cha Cha, both music and dance, are very much present in his high energy and informative classes.
