A World Premiere by Maray Gutierrez -- LIVE MUSIC
Choreography by Maray Gutierrez Music by Gabriela Lena Frank Costumes by Brian Reyes
This new artistic collaboration will explore the "Chifa," or Asian influence in the Latino Diaspora and include costumes by couture designer Brian Reyes. A native of Havana, Cuba, Gutierrez began her training at the Paulita Concepcion Vocational School of the Arts and continued her studies at the National School of Dance. She has created works for Hedwig Dances in Chicago and Danza Contemporanea de Cuba. Frank's score will fuse traditional Asian instruments with the classica, combining the pipa, cello, and violin.
The world premiere featuring the work of Maray Gutierrez and the music of Gabriela Lena Frank was commissioned, in part, with funding from Works & Process at the Guggenheim and the American Music Center Live Music for Dance Program.

Choreography by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa Music by Bart Rijnink
Ochoa will work with composer/sound designer Bart Rijnink to create a new work that explores iconic male/female images and gender role playing Latin American cultures. The score will draw on the music of Chavela Vargas, who is best known for her rendition of beloved Mexican rancheras.
M was commissioned, in part, by The Surdna Foundation.

World Premiere: 1975 at Hunter College Playhouse
Set to three songs (tres cantos) by Latin American composers Carlos Chavez, Lorenzo Fernandez, and Silvestre Revueltas, Talley Beatty's 1975 masterwork reflects the history of Mexico, from its Aztec roots through the Spanish Conquest to the re-emergence of the native peoples' unconquered spirit. This revival celebrates the 200th anniversary of Mexico's independence. Featuring Alondra de la Parra and the Tres Cantos Ensemble.
American Express and the National Endowment for the Arts are the underwriters of the revival of TRES CANTOS. This work was originally made possible, in part, with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Drawing from the duality of her Spanish and Jewish-American background, choreographer Andrea Miller employs her distinctive movement style to investigate the Sephardic culture of Spain, with its Moorish influence and profound sense of community, despite hardship.
Andrea Miller’s choreographic fellowship was made possible by a 2009 Princess Grace Award.

Carlos Sierra-Lopez -a Puerto Rican choreographer and former Ballet Hispanico company member - created DESTINO INCIERTO for three dancers. The 12-minutes piece echoes the timeless characters of Carmen, Don Jose, and Escamillo in an emotional journey through each character's struggle to find harmony for themselves and one another.

Latin Dancing at its best. The intoxicating rhythms of the Conga, Rumba, Mambo, and Cha Cha are brought to life by choreographer Pedro Ruiz, himself a native of Cuba, as he imagined his very own “Club Havana.”
