General Information

In conjunction with the company's concert performances, Ballet Hispanico offers a wide array of activities, developed through its educational program, Primeros Pasos, which are designed to involve the community, attract new audiences and provide educational programming for the local schools. These activities, described below, include Performances for Young People, Latin Social Dance Classes, Master Classes, Movement Workshops for Students, Orientation Workshops for Teachers, and an Artist's Talk.

Presenters who book a company concert may also engage the company for residency activities, which are selected at the time the performance is booked and scheduled on non-performance days. It is preferable to have residency activities on any given day conducted in the same facility; if different locations are used, time must be allowed for travel and preparation. Presenters are encouraged to discuss their needs in detail with Ballet Hispanico staff well in advance, to ensure that time and appropriate resources are available.

Performances for Young People

A spirited blend of dance and narrative, these 50-minute performances draw on repertory commissioned especially for the presentation or from company repertory, to provide a theatrical and entertaining insight into the vibrant traditions and contemporary cultures of Latin America. Presentations have included such works as Crossing Borders, Viva Las Americas! and Rhythms of Latin America; the availability of these works varies from year to year.

Age group: All school age levels.

Space and technical requirements: Requires a professionally-equipped theater, with an appropriate dance floor and full lighting capabilities; technical set-up time and crew are required.

Materials provided: Teacher Study Guides are available, which offer background information on each work in the performance, a brief history of the company and a series of lively educational activities for classroom use both before and after the performance.

Latin Social Dance Class

This one-hour class appeals to anyone who would like to learn one of today's most popular Latin dances, the salsa. By the end of the class, participants at any skill level will enjoy taking a turn around the dance floor to this irresistible Latin rhythm. One of Ballet Hispanico's most popular residency activities, the class is taught by two of Ballet Hispanico's talented company members.

Age group: All ages.

Space and technical requirements: Adaptable to almost any location with a large open space, although a carpeted area is not recommended. A sound system or boom box is required.

Master Classes

Senior members of the company teach master classes, lasting approximately one and one-half hours, in ballet or modern technique. These classes offer advanced-level dance students the opportunity to work directly with one of Ballet Hispanico's highly skilled performers.

Age group: High school and college age dance students; maximum of 25 participants.

Space and technical requirements: A professional dance studio, with a sprung floor and dance surface. Presenters are encouraged to provide a pianist to accompany the class; otherwise, a sound system or boom box is required.

Movement Workshops for Students

Led by two company members, Ballet Hispanico's 45-minute classroom workshops for students focus on dance movement appropriate to the age level, and are designed to enhance students' understanding and appreciation of dance in performance. Workshops can be held either before or after the students attend a performance for young people or a company concert.

Age group: All school age levels; maximum of 25 participants.

Space and technical requirements: Classrooms, dance studios or gym facilities.

Orientation Workshops for Teachers and Educators

Led by a Ballet Hispanico Teaching Artist, these orientation sessions for elementary, middle and high school teachers provide an introduction to the use of dance in reinforcing other learning skills and to complement academic subjects. Usually held in advance of a company residency, these workshops offer teachers and educators a first-hand experience with the dance forms that their students will experience in a workshop, dance concert or Performance for Young People.

Age group: Adults.

Space and technical requirements: An open space, such as a library, dance studio, auditorium or gym, with movable seating; a boom box is required.

Artist's Talk

Artistic Director Tina Ramirez or members of the company give an informal talk, which focuses on the company's history and the artistic influences which inspired the creation of Ballet Hispanico.

Age group: All ages.

Space and technical requirements: Microphone and sound system suitable to the hall; a lectern and pitcher of water are requested.
