About Instituto Coreográfico![]() In September 2010, Ballet Hispanico launched Instituto Coreográfico, Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro's groundbreaking new institute for Latino artists to explore culturally specific work in a learning laboratory. Held at Ballet Hispanico headquarters, the inaugrual Instituto featured Cuban-American choreographers Maray Ramis Gutierrez, who created Puntos Suspensivos, a new work that premiered at the 2010 New York season at The Joyce Theater, and Judith Sánchez Ruíz, who saw her work I Will Stay With You Even When You Are Gone premiere at Works & Process at The Guggenheim. Each choreographer had their work advised by a panel of notable artists such as choreographer and former Paul Taylor dancer Richard Chen See, former Ballet Hispanico Company dancer and choreographer Pedro Ruiz, Director of Programming at The Joyce Theater, Martin Wechsler, and choreographer Sydney Skybetter. Two student filmmakers Danny Mendoza and Benjamin Halstead, through the guidance of filmmaker Gerrit Vooren, documented the activity and those videos along with insights and ideas, were posted on the Ballet Hispanico blog and on our Facebook fan page. In January 2011, the second Instituto commenced with our own Company dancer, Nicholas Villeneuve, at the helm. This project will be Mr. Villeneuve’s first work for the Ballet Hispanico Company, which will be set to Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla’s “Las Cuatro Estaciones Portenas du Buenos Aires" and will explore the concepts of “change, birth, and rebirth,” which take thematic influence from the musical score. The work was performed live with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s for ten performances for young people at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center from March 29 – April 1, 2011. |
