Select Ballet Hispanico faculty members offer a variety of dance classes for Adults via our Associates Program. While these classes are housed in Ballet Hispanico's 89th Street Studios, registration and payment are managed directly through your instructor, not our School of Dance.

FLAMENCO
TEACHER: MELINDA MARQUEZ
Adult Absolute and Basic Beginner: TUESDAYS, 6:15-7:15pm This class gives students the fundamentals needed to understand flamenco movement and compas and to execute basic taconeo, marcaje and braceo. Sevillanas are also taught during the semester.
Adult Intermediate/ Advanced: TUESDAYS, 7:15-8:45pm This is a fast moving class with emphasis on strong and accurate technique and clarity of line and movement. The class begins with technique strengthening exercises and combinations and moves on to choreography and improvisation.
Adult Advanced Beginner/ Intermediate: THURSDAYS, 6:45-8:15pm The beginner/ intermediate class is an excellent segueway from the absolute beginner level into more advanced work. Students receive individual attention and encouragement. A good class to combine with basic beginner or intermediate/advanced depending on each individual's level.
Adult Beginner: MONDAYS, 6:30-7:30pm (Ballet Hispanico) & SATURDAYS, 1:00-2:00pm (Bridge for Dance) Students should have at least 6 months of Flamenco experience. Session runs September 8-28, 2009.
Intermediate Technique: MONDAYS, 7:30-8:30pm & TUESDAYS, 6:45-7:45 (Ballet Hispanico) Students should have a strong foundation of Flamenco technique including placement, footwork, armwork and an understanding of syncopations and Flamenco compas. Session runs September 8 - December 12, 2009.
Intermediate Choreography: TUESDAYS, 7:45-8:45 (Ballet Hispanico) & SATURDAYS, 3:00-4:00 (Bridge for Dance) Choregraphy is Bamberas. Session runs September 8 - December 12, 2009.
Technique and Style: THURSDAYS, 8:00-9:00pm & SATURDAYS, 2:00-3:00pm These classes focus on building technique in foot and armwork, turns, marcajes, contratiempos, letras, and the finer points of style. Session runs September 9-November 24, 2009 (No Class Sept. 19). FEE: $20 for drop-ins, $108 for 6 classes, $204 for 12 classes, $320 for 21 classes. Bring Your Own Alegrias: SATURDAYS, 3:00-4:00pm Accompanied by guitar and singing, we will cycle again through the Alegrias. This session will focus on fluency in building and dancing larger blocks of choreography. The goal is to work toward being able to perform the entire dance with ease and without rehearsal. This is a wonderful study in structure and improvisation. Session runs September 12 - November 21, 2009 (No class on Sept. 19). FEE: $25 for drop-ins, $200 for full 10-class session.
Footwork Improvisation Workshop: SATURDAYS, 4:00-5:00pm Looks at taking simple steps and varying the rhythm; how to structure an improv by extending and weaving a pattern and then "rematando" or finishing it off. We'll work especially on how to improvise a "solo de pie" with contratiempos, footwork variations, marcajes and remates. We all practice giving good "base": palmas and jaleos. Session runs September 12 - November 21, 2009 (No class on Sept. 19). FEE: $25 for drop-ins, $200 for full workshop.
Adult Advanced Beginner Ballet: WEDNESDAYS, 7:00-8:30pm This class focuses on building strength, balance and musicality. Students will use a kinesthetic approach to the mechanics that can make classical ballet accessible, organic and fun.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga: TUESDAYS, 6:30-8:00pm Vinyasa flow links classic yoga postures in a continuous flow focusing on the synchronization of breath and movement. Each class has different sequences of postures which are physically challenging but not overly complex. Bring a mat, a friend and allow yourself to be amazed at the results of your hard work. All levels are welcome.
