Summer Program

The summer months offer an ideal opportunity for training in Ballet Hispanico's core techniques: ballet, contemporary, and Spanish dance, in addition to special topics exclusive to the summer program.  Choose from one of four stimulating courses of summer study at the Ballet  Hispanico School of Dance:



SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM 2009

(Ages 10-25)
 
Our guiding principal is that all students have the potential to develop the self esteem and pride of acheivement that come through the transformative power of dance.  THe 2009 Summer Intensive Program offers students from around the world the opportunity to diversify and strengthen their technique to stay competitive in the dance landscape today.  This five-day-a-week curriculum expands on Ballet Hispanico's core techniques of Ballet, Spanish and Modern dance.  Students are placed into one of four levels according to technical ability, and participate in a culminating performance. Admission to the program is by audition only

  • Video (10 minutes max); should include work at the barre and in the center consisting of an adagio, en dehors and en dedans pirouettes, petit and grand allegro. Men should include a tours en l'air combination.

Laura Alonso
, the daughter of world famous ballerina Alicia Alonso and famous teacher and coach Fernando Alonso is herself known as a teacher, coach, and expert at staging the renowned classics. Along with her expertise in working with professionals, Ms. Alsonso is extremely gifted at working with young dancers of all ages and experiences. Alonso is a resident of Havana where she has an international dance school, Centro Pro Danza, which welcomes 1,500 students and a professional company, The Ballet Classic of Havana. She has also taught for the Cuban National Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, The Australian Ballet, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Tokyo Ballet, the Toronto Ballet, The Alberta Ballet and many others.  Ms. Alonso's 25-year performing career has included soloist work in all of the traditional classics and today she travels around the world teaching and staging the classics.

Alba Calzada Carter began her dance studies at Ballet de San Juan with Ana Garcia and Juan Anduze.  As Prima Ballerina of the company she performed a classical repetoire including Giselle, Copellia and Swan Lake.  As a principal dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet for ten years, her repetoire expanded to include contemporary and Balanchine works.  In 1979 Ms. Calzada ended her performing career, moved to New York City and began teaching at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.  In conjunction with her teaching, she continued education in anatomy, kinesiology, dance pedagogy, Pilates, Gyrotonics © and Massage therapy.  Presently Ms. Calzada has her own studio in Miami, FL where she offers Pilates and Gyrotonic © training for conditioning and post rehabilitation.

Hilda Morales was born in NYC, and raised in Puerto Rico.  Her early training was with Ana Garcia of the Ballet San Juan.  At 14 years of age, Ms. Morales received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to study at George Balanchine's School of American Ballet.  She danced as a principal dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet, soloist with American Ballet Theatre, artist in residence with the Colorado Ballet and guest appearances with Les Grandes Ballet Canadien, Albuquerque Ballet and Jacksonville Ballet.  During her dancing career Ms. Morales performed in full length classic ballets as well as works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Agnes De Mille, Anthony Tudor, John Butler, Alvin Ailey and Jose Limon.  She guest teaches and is on the faculty of the Central Pennsylvania summer programs.  Ms. Morales has been a faculty member of the Hartt School since 1998.



HOUSING OPTIONS

The school does not provide housing. However, Ballet Hispanico does have an affiliation with the de Hirsch Residences at the 92nd Street Y  as well as the Brandon House.  Students, 17 years or older, accepted in the Ballet Hispanico Summer Intensive Program may obtain discounted single or double dormitory style rooms by registering and mentioning that you are in our program. The 92nd Street Y is approximately 15 minutes from the studios directly cross-town on the westbound M-86 bus. Other housing options follow:

2009 PRE-SCHOOL SUMMER DANCE CAMPS
(Ages 3 - 6)
 
Each five day workshop cultivates an appreciation and awareness of Latino culture by immersing children in multisensory activities focused on a specific country of study. Activities include Creative Movement, Arts & Crafts, Fundamentals of Latin Rhythm & Music, Storytelling, Snack-time. Students will be divided by age group (3/4 & 5/6). Classes meet Monday-Friday, from 9:00am-12:00pm.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
(Ages 6-19)
 
The Enrichment Program is especially designed for students who are not pursuing the full-time study of dance, providing a sampling of the rich dance forms. Students can choose from classes in Ballet, Flamenco, Hip-Hop, and Jazz. Ballet Hispanico's faculty provides unparalleled instruction while remaining sensitive to the special developmental needs of our young dancers.
