Summer Program

The summer months offer an ideal opportunity for training in Ballet Hispanico's core techniques: ballet, contemporary, and Spanish dance, in addition to special topics exclusive to the summer program.  Choose from one of four stimulating courses of summer study at the Ballet  Hispanico School of Dance:

PRE-SCHOOL SUMMER DANCE SERIES
(Ages 3 - 6)
 

Back by popular demand, this culturally enriching workshop will offer two week-long sessions. Daily activities include classes in Creative movement, Spanish dance, costume and mask making, and Latin rhythm and drumming. Each 5-day workshop culminates in a studio performance for parents on the final Friday of each program. Daily snacks relevant to the culture of study will be provided. Students will be divided by age group (3/4 & 5/6).  Classes meet Monday-Friday, from 9:00am-12:00pm.


Week 1: June 16-20, 2008 - Dominican Republic
Week 2: June 23-27, 2008 - Brazil

FEE: $250 per week, plus a $15 registration fee

Students must pre-register by submitting a registration form and a $15 registration fee.  Payment is due upon registration.  Tuition subsidy is available for those who meet Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.  Space is limited.


 

ADVENTURES IN DANCE 
(Ages 2.5 - 6)

The Adventures in Dance Summer Program carries the same joy for dance that our students experience throughout the academic year into the Summer months.  Ballet Hispanico offers a fun and welcoming environment in which young children can explore movement in innovative ways. Choose from a variety of classes including Dance with Me, Pasitos, Discovery, Creative, and Pre-Ballet.
Classes meet once per week.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
(Ages 6-19)
 
The Enrichment Program is especially designed for students who are not pursuing the full-time study of dance, rather they enjoy a sampling of the rich dance forms available to them.  Students can choose from classes in Ballet, Spanish dance, Hip-Hop, and Jazz.   Ballet Hispanico's faculty provides unparalleled instruction while remaining sensitive to the special developmental needs of our young dancers. 
Classes meet twice per week.

FEE: $120, plus a $15 registration fee

SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM 2008

(Ages 11-25)
 
Geared towards advanced pre-professionals and School Ensemble members, the Intensive Program provides a highly structured curriculum in a five-day-a-week schedule. Admission to the Summer Intensive Program is by audition only.  Students are placed into one of four levels according to their technical ability.  This training regime results in technical refinement and an introduction to Ballet Hispanico's diverse repertory.  Students are required to attend the complete schedule of classes as assigned, and each student will participate in a culminating mainstage presentation.  The 2008 Summer Intensive curriculum consists of:

BALLET, FLAMENCO, JAZZ, MODERN, POINTE, VARIATIONS, HIP HOP, MEN'S CLASSES, PARTNERING, LATIN DANCE, SPANISH FOLKLORIC; and SPECIALTY CLASSES IN STAGECRAFT, IMPROVISATION, FLOOR BARRE, NUTRITION, and MUSIC FOR DANCERS

VIDEO AUDITIONS:
Ballet Hispanico will be accepting video auditions now through May 23rd.  Please send in the following postmarked by Friday, May 23rd.

  • A completed  Video Audition Form 
  • A letter of recomendation from a current instructor
  • A $15 Audition/Application fee applies for video and live auditions 
  • A headshot; photo in first arabesque and tendu a la seconde
  • Video (10 minutes max); should include work at the barre and in the center consisting of an adagio, pirouette, petit allegro, and grand allegro

Women: Please include a pirouette combination with both en dehors and en dedans turns.
Men: Please include two turning combinations and a combination with tours en l'air.

Laura Alonso
, the daughter of world famous ballerina Alicia Alonso and famous teacher and coach Fernando Alonso is herself known as a teacher, coach, and expert at staging the renowned classics. Along with her expertise in working with professionals, Ms. Alsonso is extremely gifted at working with young dancers of all ages and experiences. Alonso is a resident of Havana where she has an international dance school, Centro Pro Danza, which welcomes 1,500 students and a professional company, The Ballet Classic of Havana. She has also taught for the Cuban National Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, The Australian Ballet, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Tokyo Ballet, the Toronto Ballet, The Alberta Ballet and many others.  Ms. Alonso's 25-year performing career has included soloist work in all of the traditional classics and today she travels around the world teaching and staging the classics.

Alba Calzada Carter began her dance studies at Ballet de San Juan with Ana Garcia and Juan Anduze.  As Prima Ballerina of the company she performed a classical repetoire including Giselle, Copellia and Swan Lake.  As a principal dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet for ten years, her repetoire expanded to include contemporary and Balanchine works.  In 1979 Ms. Calzada ended her performing career, moved to New York City and began teaching at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.  In conjunction with her teaching, she continued education in anatomy, kinesiology, dance pedagogy, Pilates, Gyrotonics © and Massage therapy.  Presently Ms. Calzada has her own studio in Miami, FL where she offers Pilates and Gyrotonic © training for conditioning and post rehabilitation.

Hilda Morales was born in NYC, and raised in Puerto Rico.  Her early training was with Ana Garcia of the Ballet San Juan.  At 14 years of age, Ms. Morales received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to study at George Balanchine's School of American Ballet.  She danced as a principal dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet, soloist with American Ballet Theatre, artist in residence with the Colorado Ballet and guest appearances with Les Grandes Ballet Canadien, Albuquerque Ballet and Jacksonville Ballet.  During her dancing career Ms. Morales performed in full length classic ballets as well as works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Agnes De Mille, Anthony Tudor, John Butler, Alvin Ailey and Jose Limon.  She guest teaches and is on the faculty of the Central Pennsylvania summer programs.  Ms. Morales has been a faculty member of the Hartt School since 1998.



HOUSING OPTIONS

The school does not provide housing. However, Ballet Hispanico does have an affiliation with the de Hirsch Residences at the 92nd Street Y  as well as the Brandon House.  Students, 17 years or older, accepted in the Ballet Hispanico Summer Intensive Program may obtain discounted single or double dormitory style rooms by registering and mentioning that you are in our program. The 92nd Street Y is approximately 15 minutes from the studios directly cross-town on the westbound M-86 bus. Other housing options follow:
