History
From its origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, Ballet Hispánico has grown into a world-class institution.
Founded in 1970 by Tina Ramirez, whose visionary leadership earned her the National Medal of Arts—the nation’s highest cultural honor—Ballet Hispánico has remained a cornerstone of dance and culture. Its New York City headquarters is home to the renowned School of Dance and state-of-the-art studios that serve both its programs and the broader arts community.
In August 2009, Ballet Hispánico welcomed Eduardo Vilaro as Artistic Director. A former company dancer and the founder of Chicago’s Luna Negra Dance Theater, Vilaro brings a dynamic artistic vision shaped by his deep experience in dance education and community engagement. Under his leadership, Ballet Hispánico continues to expand its artistic reach, honoring its rich legacy while shaping the future of dance.
